The Penultimate Mile: Leslie Caron in The L-Shaped Room

(one installment in a quick series counting down from 50 to 26!)

The competition (Cliff: 5 for 5!):

Patricia Neal in Hud

Shirley MacLaine in Irma la Douce

Rachel Roberts in This Sporting Life

Natalie Wood in Love with the Proper Stranger

The second of two 1963 nominees about unwed women grappling with pregnancy, and the first of three nominated performances directed by Bryan Forbes left on my list, this is the kitchen-sink realism version of the above film. Here, the abortion question is front and center and Mr. Right doesn’t come along, though the film remains hopeful enough. Leslie at least earns points for committing to such a dramatic role, though I don’t think she nails the nuance of her character’s intense emotions. Still, the film is ably directed and a fascinating companion piece to its fellow nominee.
